One of the more unusual methods women admitted using was applying haemorrhoid cream under the eyes to reduce bags.

Vaseline was also found to be a useful beauty tool.

Respondents to the Lakeside Shopping Centre survey reported using the jelly on their eyes to make them look wide-eyed and on their calves to make (their legs) look longer and glossy.

"It's quick and simple and can be a last-minute solution,'' she said. "It can make or break an outfit.

"It might be that your dress is showing off your pot belly, but put on a pair of pull-on pants and it's all gone.

"Nobody has to know what's going on underneath.''

A new arm of the beauty and fashion industry has developed to meet the growing demand for fashion aids and unprecedented popularity of "granny undies''.
